The glassy green-white glaze on this Raqqa bottle is almost entirely covered by silvery areas of partial disintegration. The abraded surface and broken neck no deterrent to Freer, however, who purchased it from the Paris-based dealer Dikran Kelekian in the fall of 1905. As the availability of Japanese art in Western markets began to decline, Kelekian and other dealers looked to the arts of the Islamic world, where recent unofficial excavations had made ceramics and textiles available. Raqqa ware like this was especially appealing to Freer. He discerned chromatic harmonies among his already-substantial collection of East Asian ceramics, his tonalist American paintings, and the iridescent glazed vessels from the Near East.

Freer, who did not care for porcelain, admired the warmer appearance of white or cream stoneware from the Satsuma kilns in southern Japan. This hexagonal bottle was Freer's first acquisition of an Asian ceramic. The bottle bears scenes of fishermen along a river—a "Whistlerian landscape," as Freer described it in his inventory notes. Although Freer avoided the commercial versions of decorated Satsuma ware, made for sale at international expositions, he probably appreciated the parallels between this jar's refined decoration and the Japanese and American paintings he collected. In 1905, Freer acquired another sake flask of Satsuma ware (F1905.41), which was decorated so similarly to his first Japanese ceramic piece that Freer considered it to be "by the same workman."

This piece, part of the 1898 sale of the Charles Dana collection, was described in the auction catalogue as "invested with a rich yellow and pale claire de lune glaze, permeated by a double crackle in violet and brown." Freer circled the entry and noted, "Most perfect." The reference to <i>claire de lune</i> suggests that Freer and his contemporaries regarded this as an example of Jun ware, which was produced in Henan province of China from the Song dynasty through the fifteenth century. Jun ware is characterized by its distinctive glazes, which range from greenish-blue to lavender and lavender-blue with violet splashes or marks. This bottle is actually a later example of a Jun-style glaze. In the Peacock Room, which Freer called "the blue room," this bottle was one of more than forty Jun or similarly blue-glazed ceramics displayed along the south wall, just beneath Whistler's allegorical mural of two battling peacocks.

This bottle, with the distinctive splashes of green along its shoulder, was purchased from the New York shop of Yamanaka and Company. The dealer told Freer that it had been found in Korea and was thought to have been made there. Freer, however, later suspected&#151;correctly&#151;that it was Chinese and from the Song dynasty. Accordingly, he displayed it in the Peacock Room in Detroit adjacent to other Song ceramics.

This slender baluster-shaped bottle was purchased by Freer from the New York branch of Yamanaka and Company in 1905, and at the time it was thought to date to the Song dynasty. Like many of Freer's ceramics, this piece is now known to be from a later period of production. In the Peacock Room in Detroit, the collector displayed it near a number of other Chinese ceramics, many of them featuring a similarly cream-colored surface with touches of color along the neck or shoulder.

"This jar," Freer commented in an undated inventory note, "was found in Corea [sic] and was originally supposed to have been made in that country; I believe it, however, to be Chinese made during the Sung dynasty." The piece was purchased from the Boston-based dealer Matsuki Bunkyo, and it is now believed to be an Edo-period piece from Japan. In the Peacock Room, Freer placed it alongside other similarly large vessels, on the tall shelves surrounding the gilded peacock shutters.

Purchased by Freer from the Paris-based dealer Dikran Kelekian in 1903, this bottle, with its distinctive shape and porcelain-like appearance, was modeled after a Chinese prototype. It thus evoked for Freer the kind of cross-cultural connections that undergirded his collecting philosophy. He described it as "an interesting specimen of 16th-century ware formerly in the celebrated collection of Captain Meyer," and noted that it was "valuable for its association quite apart from other qualities." In the Peacock Room, Freer displayed the bottle adjacent to other Iranian wares as well as Chinese porcelains and a Korean celadon ewer.

Excavated in Syria and sold to Freer from the Paris gallery of Siegfried Bing in 1905, this flattened, short-necked bottle was described by the collector as "rare and very beautiful." The varied tones of discoloration on the surface and the abraded decoration, modeled in relief, were appealing to Freer, who discerned chromatic harmonies among his already-substantial collection of East Asian ceramics, his tonalist American paintings, and ravaged, but chromatically complex, vessels like this from the Near East. When Freer loaned this bottle to an exhibition of East Asian ceramics at the Japan Society of New York in February 1914, it was thought to date to the Song dynasty. Like many of the ceramics that Freer purchased from the dealer Matsuki Bunkyo, this vessel has since been identified as dating to the Yuan dynasty. This was not necessarily because Matsuki was misrepresenting his goods; almost no one understood Yuan ceramics well until the 1950s. In the Peacock Room, the bottle was exhibited with other dark, glossy ceramics, some of which were similarly decorated with touches of gold pigment.

The geographical origins of this bottle were not known to Freer, who purchased it from the Parisian dealer Siegfried Bing along with a number of other East Asian ceramics. Nevertheless, the collector described it as "very important" and suggested that it be exhibited occasionally by itself, as well with groupings of Temmoku wares. In the Peacock Room he placed it adjacent to earth-toned Japanese tea bowls, iridescent Raqqa ware, an antique Roman faience jar, and a Song dynasty tomb jar.

Freer acquired this "very fine" flat- sided flask from Y. Fujita and Company in 1903. An example of Japanese Takatori ware (pottery made in the Fukuoka Prefecture), it dates to the Edo period. This flask was likely used for tea ceremonies, in keeping with the tea bowls and caddies that are also associated with Takatori ware. This vessel's precise light grey finish was likely achieved by glazing the clay with iron in the kiln. In the Peacock Room, Freer grouped it with a rather varied array of East Asian ceramics, including a number of similarly dark glazed specimens.
