Western connoisseurs who collected Chinese ceramics at the turn of the century knew relatively little about earlier wares. Since the meticulously formed and decorated Qing dynasty porcelains were generally regarded as the culminating achievement of a centuries-old tradition, it was assumed that the earlier wares must be more heavily potted and glazed. Thus, when Freer purchased this vase in 1896, he accepted the Song dynasty date assigned to it, though it is now known to be from the Ming dynasty. In the Peacock Room in Detroit, it was displayed along the south wall, amid more than forty bright blue Jun or "Jun style" ceramics. This lustrous, creamy white vase was one of several similarly toned vessels that Freer seems to have used on the south wall to punctuate the "harmonies in blue" created by the massing of Jun ware around the sideboard.

Bottle
The Peacock Room, originally the dining room in the home of Frederick R. Leyland, was intended to showcase its owner's extensive collection of Chinese blue-and -white porcelain. Among his 300-plus pieces were examples similar to this vessel. Known as Kangxi ware, these pots were produced in the Jingdezhen region during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722). They became so popular with Victorian consumers that the press mockingly dubbed the craze "Chinamania." <p>When Charles Lang Freer purchased the Peacock Room in London in 1904, it had already been emptied of its blue-and-white porcelains. Freer, in any case, did not care for their slick surfaces and bright glazes. Beginning in the 1980s, the Freer Gallery of Art began to acquire blue-and-whites for display in the Peacock Room, in an effort to evoke the chromatic relationships and pictorial patterns that inspired Whistler and his contemporaries.

The Peacock Room, originally the dining room in the home of Frederick R. Leyland, was intended to showcase its owner's extensive collection of Chinese blue-and -white porcelain. Among his 300-plus pieces were examples similar to this vessel. Known as Kangxi ware, these pots were produced in the Jingdezhen region during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722). They became so popular with Victorian consumers that the press mockingly dubbed the craze "Chinamania."

When Charles Lang Freer purchased the Peacock Room in London in 1904, it had already been emptied of its blue-and-white porcelains. Freer, in any case, did not care for their slick surfaces and bright glazes. Dated to the Ming dynasty, this bluish-black glazed jar is chromatically complex, with areas of lighter tone and an iridescent surface. When Freer purchased it in 1897 from Yamanaka and Company, it was thought to be Japanese. Freer noted that it was "beautiful," and, in his inventory notes, observed, "interesting when seen in individual case; also very impressive shown with specimens of both Chinese and Japanese Temmoku" (the highly regarded dark-glazed tea wares first made at kilns in Fujian province in China and brought to Japan in the thirteenth century by Japanese Buddhist monks). In the Peacock Room, this jar was not, however, shown individually, but was grouped with a number of similarly dark colored East Asian vessels as well as an array of Raqqa ware from the Near East.

This striking Ming dynasty stoneware vase with a translucent crackled glaze was loaned by Freer to several exhibitions during his lifetime, including a 1914 presentation at the Japan Society of New York, and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916, where it was part of an exhibition of "early Chinese pottery and sculpture."
