After purchasing this nineteenth century vase in China, Freer speculated that it was "probably Ming but may be later Yuan." It is now known to be of more recent date, from the Qing dynasty of China. Its saturated coloration, with splashes of strawberry red and cobalt blue, relates to the many piece of Jun and Jun-style wares that Freer displayed on the adjacent wall, beneath Whistler's mural of two battling peacocks.
